March 2024 Membership Meeting Recap

March All-Store Meeting Recap

Members assembled on March 7th to decide on behalf of NSLU. The meeting was at the Musician’s local 99 hall due to a scheduling conflict. Future meetings will be back at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church.

Just Cause Ballot Measure Endorsed

Mathew Fennell, the president of the Organizer’s Union for Just Cause, gave a presentation on Oregon ballot measure 2024-049, the Just Cause for Oregon Employees Act. The Act would end at-will employment in the state of Oregon for all non-temporary employees by establishing an individual’s property right to their own employment, and would allow employers to terminate employment only for just cause.

Just cause is a near-universal feature of union contracts and also applies to non-union employees in 35 countries, including Canada and Mexico. Layoffs for legitimate economic reasons would still be allowed. The act would be enforced by Oregon BOLI for private sector employees, at no cost to unjustly terminated employees.

Members voted at the meeting to endorse the Act.

Rules Committee Created - Election April 5th.

Members voted to create a rules committee to study and propose updates to the Union’s bylaws. The committee will consist of two steering committee appointments, and three members to be elected at the April 5th all-store meeting. If you would like to participate on this committee, please attend the April 5 all-store meeting to nominate yourself. If you cannot attend, please have another member come to the meeting to nominate you. Nominations will be taken and will be seats elected at the meeting.
