Ethan H. from Williams, one of our bargaining committee co-chairs, was recently investigated for missing work to attend a bargaining session. New Seasons had previously agreed to “work release” meaning that staff on the bargaining team were allowed to miss work to attend the negotiations, but the company was threatening to label this day as an unexcused absence which could have led to Ethan’s termination.

In response, members at Williams did a march on the boss and demanded that the company not fire Ethan. The bargaining team backed up this demand at the bargaining table the next session with the force of over 170 members who signed up to walk off over attendance terminations. New Seasons agreed to excuse this absence, and Ethan is no longer at risk of termination.

“We would not be in this situation if our employer had implemented the new attendance policy. This feels like a scare tactic by them to make us worried about attending union events. I’m glad that management saw our collective action and decided to meet our demands, an injury to one is an injury to all!”. Said Ella Meloy, a Williams bargaining rep.
